Not Everything Is A Republican Conspiracy

poster: The Secret Diagrams by Gerhard Seyfried (Click for LARGE.)

Karl Rove Isn't Behind Everything

I hate circular firing squads.

They serve no one but the enemy. And as Democrats, much more so than Republicans, who'll let Ann Coulter speak for them without saying anything, inviting her back over and over again, we of all people should perhaps learn not to shoot our own people over trivia.

The problem I have today, is I have a profound respect for the law. And a blog I actually like, even with their rhetorical excesses, ran a post last week, which is unmitigated crap. No one else called them out, so, I'm going to do it.

DownWithTyranny suggested that a recent D.C. Court of Appeals decision recently profiled in the Washington Post, was rigged so as to pay off for Republicans:

DownWithTyranny!

Bush's incompetent and overly partisan appointments to the courts have ruined the entire justice system of the United States and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is now an outgrowth of the neo-nazi outfit known as the Federalist Society. They are making it impossible to prosecute the overt criminal activities of bribe-taking congressmen by abusing statutes "intended to protect legislators from intimidation under civil or criminal law."

The Federalist Society court has ruled the Justice Department can't use evidence against the crooked Republicans that was obtained through court-approved wiretaps, searches of home offices and voluntary interviews of congressional staffers. Of the 10 current members of the court, seven are rabid right wing fanatics appointed by Reagan, Bush, Sr and, mostly Bush, Jr, who allowed the Federalist Society to dictate each nominee, none of whom faced any serious opposition from a collaborationist Senate.
Wow, just reading this, one could almost believe the Federalist Society has taken over the D.C. Circuit, and this particular case was rigged.

Turns out not to be the case. (Go back and read The Washington Post article to grasp the actual issue.)

First however, let me just suggest we reserve calling anyone a "neo-nazi outfit" be reserved for people whom, like, are? Say the KKK, or the Aryan Brotherhood. Not a group of distinguished attorneys and judges, no matter how much you or I may hold many of their political views in contempt.

Second, learn to tell your judges apart. I went digging, and where I didn't know the answer, I wrote a letter and asked questions, dug around. This is one of those times I wish I could mention whom I spoke with, because I admire her/him a lot, as a distinguished legal scholar. But it was all off the record.

I'm going to paraphrase what my unnamed distinguished legal source told me on Thanksgiving Day:
It's a joke to think for a moment the D.C. Circuit decision was written for the benefit of Republicans. The author of the opinion was Judge Judith Rogers, nominated by Clinton, probably the most liberal member of the court. Judge Henderson who concurred, but refused to agree with the speech and debate clause part which is causing all the trouble for the DOJ, was nominated by Bush (41), and is moderate-conservative. It is almost certain the breakdown of the court's vote not to review the panel decision also did not break ideologically, given who was on the original panel. The very thought of Judge Rogers writing a decision to benefit Republicans is ridiculous, doubly so when a GOP-nominated judge went the opposite way. As is the thought of any judge on the court writing a decision to benefit corrupt politicians. These are judges.
Again; this is my paraphrase of my source, not a precise quote. And while I would have loved to have given credit, my original letter asking for help promised to keep her/his name off the record.

I agree with this assessment. I just didn't know the breakout of the judges, and while I could have looked them up, I didn't know how they might have, um, drifted... over the years. Which is why I had to go ask someone who knows them.

With all respect, the DownWithTyranny post was an idiot thing to write, and an embarrassment to liberalism.

It was stupid to write, because simple fact checking would have revealed the writer of the majority opinion was a Democrat, and the writer of the swing vote concurring with the majority but against the whole speech and debate clause section which is the problem for the Justice Department, was a Republican.

It embarrasses liberalism because it sticks us with goofy conspiracy nuts who see 9/11 in every government degree, voter fraud in every movement of a ballot box, and Karl Rove behind every reverse of every liberal idea everywhere. Sometimes, we just have our facts wrong, and we need to try very hard to not do that.

Will this ruling make things harder for the DOJ? Yes, most likely. That is why they are strongly considering appealing. But that is how rulings go sometimes.

The facts are, a Judge (nominated Democratic), expanded a privilege which may or may not be upheld at the Supreme Court level, if it gets that far. It was a close vote, and a Judge (nominated Republican) voted against expanding the critical part of expanding the privilege. Both of which are the precise opposite of how they would have voted if they were voting ideologically. The remainder of the Court split on non-partisan grounds as well.

There are enough actual attacks on our liberties, that we serve no one when we insist on inventing conspiracy theories everywhere.

Or as I was taught as a young paramedic student learning how to diagnose patients: "When you hear hoof beats outside your window, think of horses, not zebras."

From a Horsefly On The Shed Wall in Crawford...

Scene from a weekend Texas barbecue—“Hope you don't mind Dick's Teriyaki Baby gettin' on yer Ginger Chicken, 'Berto.”

INT.- GEORGE W. BUSH'S CRAWFORD, TEXAS RANCH HOUSE-DAY

The walls are adorned with old Frederick Remington western prints, a poster for “Shanghai Noon”, and an old chest X-ray of John Wayne's, circa 1965. We hear a doorbell ring—or rather, the “ding” of a service station's customer bell when someone drives over the hose out in front. A staggering LAURA BUSH lurches into view—barely steady on her feet as she goes to the door. She's done up in a 70's-style double-knit western jumpsuit, with piping and fringe on the seams and pockets. She accidentally kicks a stuffed armadillo down the hall as she walks, holding onto the walls.

LAURA: I'm coming. I'm coming! (To herself) Shit! God...make this fucking earthquake stop! Coming!

She opens the door where we see ALBERTO GONZALES standing there holding a plate of wrapped food. A stunned Laura steps backward.

LAURA: Oh Goddamn. How did a fucking wetback get past the Secret Service? (She pounds on the wall intercom) Mayday! Mayday! Valley-Doll One is in distress! Repeat—Valley-Doll One is in distress!

GONZO: Mrs. Bush—Laura! It's me...Al.

She looks on, still wobbly and confused.

GONZO: Gonzales!

LAURA: (Recognizing him) Ohhhhhh! Well Goddamn, Al! Get yourself a... national I.D. card or something so a girl can identify you! (Laughs) Mmmmmm! I see you've brought treats...

GONZO: Tasty fish tacos, ma'am.

Laura clears her throat exaggeratedly—signaling there must be something more.

LAURA: Yes?

GONZO: Oh yes, and this! (From behind his back he produces a pickle jar-sized bottle of pills) A fine bottle of 1974 Seconal. Great vintage.

LAURA: (She sniffs at it.) It's got a lovely bou-quet! And a pre-Elvis bottling. You shouldn't have. (BEAT) But too late, you already did. Thanks!

They start walking through the house towards the back yard.

GONZO: So...where's the boss man? Out by the grill?

LAURA: No...he's hiding. From you.

GONZO: Me?

LAURA: (Sighs) He thinks you have a resignation letter or something for him, and he thinks if you can't actually hand it to him, it doesn't count. (BEAT) You don't, do you?

GONZO: Me? Naaaaaaah! Just brought...a nice plate of fish tacos.

LAURA: (BEAT) Wrapped in DOJ stationery.

GONZO: Yeaaaaaah...was all I could...y'know, get my hands on at...the-uh...time.

LAURA: Y'know, whatever. He's out there—hiding in the hay bales.

GONZO: Hay bales? I don't see any hay bales.

LAURA: (Pointing) Over there. The hay bales.

GONZO: Those aren't hay bales. They're rolls of fiberglass insulation, ma'am.

LAURA: (Chugging pills from the mouth of the jar) Mmmmmf! Hay bales, fiberglass—what's the difference?

GONZO: Well, what do you feed the horses?

LAURA: (Stunned) We have horses?

GONZO: Never mind, ma'am. I'll just find him.

Gonzales goes out the back door, onto the patio, where DICK CHENEY stands at the grill—unsteady, as he's holding a sweating bottle of Rumplemintz in one hand, while poking at charred meat with the other.

CHENEY: Hey, 'Berto. How's it hangin'?

GONZO: To the right, of course, sir.

CHENEY: Heenh-henh. Love that shit. Love it. (He picks up something extra well-done off the grill on a fork, waving it at Gonzo.) Baby?

GONZO: (Wincing at the offer) No. No thanks.

CHENEY: Sure? These are fresh ones—not from frozen embryos.

GONZO: I'll pass.

CHENEY: More for me, then. (He takes a huge swig off the Rumplemintz, dribbling it on his gingham shirt) F' you're lookin' fer Brilliantine, he's hidin' in that stack of insulation, there.

GONZO: (Walking off) Thanks.

CHENEY: (Calling out) Ehhh, I wouldn't take a piece of that and chew on it like he did. It ain't hay. Lips swelled up something awful.

GONZO: Gotcha.

Gonzales walks across the field over to the bales of insulation, which quiver and move as someone (BUSH) is obviously hiding behind them. We can HEAR him furiously scratching back there.

GONZO: Hello, sir. It's me.

BUSH: Don' know who yer talkin' to. There's nobody back here.

GONZO: Sir...I know you're back there. I can see your boot moving.

BUSH: No you don't.

GONZO: It has the Presidential Seal on it. I'm looking at it, now. Kicking.

BUSH: I stashed 'em here yestiddy so's I wouldn't nick 'em up clearin' non-existent brush. Yer lookin' at a boot with no man attached. So...be on yer way. No president back here, and he can't accept yer resignation. No sir!

GONZO: Guess he can't accept this plate of fish tacos I made, either.

BUSH: (Sniffs) Fish tacos?

GONZO: Yep...made with chopped-up Mrs. Paul fish sticks, too. Just the way the president likes 'em.

BUSH: Looka here! Foun' m' boots! (Bush rises from the fiberglass, covered in tufts of it, blotchy-skinned and totally hived-over) Hey, Berto! Let's see them tacos!

GONZO: Here you go, sir.

BUSH: Mmmmmm-mmmmm! Smells great! And ya wrapped it up so nicely, too. In paper?

GONZO: So they uh...steam better on the grill.

BUSH: And you wrote a message on it. Awwwww! (Reading) “Dear George, enjoy these tacos. Love, Fredo. P.S. I fucking...quit?” Grrrrrrrrrrrr! You son-of-a-bitch! You tricked me! (He flings plate of tacos at Gonzo who ducks it.) Fuckin'...Sancho...Villa- mother-fucker!

GONZO: It was the only way, sir. I'm sorry. And I think it's Sancho Panza.

BUSH: Whut-fuckin' ever! You can't resign! Whut about yer legacy? Whut about-about helpin' all the sexed-up children, like Chris Hansen does? Whut about makin' me look like my shit is over?

GONZO: I can't do it anymore sir.The jig is up.

BUSH: Jig? You're part Black? You specifically told me you were Mexican!

GONZO: I mean, it's done. I can't fight 'em off any more. There's nobody left at Justice. I called a meeting last week and got 15 out-of-office replies from people who'd quit. And I'd only sent out 10 messages! That's an omen, sir. Plus, I can't go back to Capitol Hill again to testify.

BUSH: Why not?

GONZO: Because I've officially run out of ways to say “I'm not gonna tell you shit!” I've said “I don't recall” 107 times. I've said “I don't recollect”, another 44 times. Said “Huh?” twenty times. Threw in a few “Duhs”. I'm spent. I'm burnt. They've got me.

BUSH: Well there's always “No habla ingles”, right? I mean, I can't actually habla the ingles real good, but for you, maaaaaan, that excuse fits like a corn husk on a tamale.

GONZO: Sir, they know I speak English.

BUSH: Yeah, but do they know it's not your first language?

GONZO: I dunno. I don't recall.

BUSH: There! See? You don't recall! You can still do this. You've got a few still in ya. C'mon. hang around. Me, Dick, and you?—We can be like the...you know, the stripped down versions of those bands from back in the day! Who fucking needs keyboards, and strings and shit? (Begins air-guitaring furiously as he “mouth-guitars” the opening chords from *Deep Purple's “Smoke On The Water”)

“Dahn-dahn-DAHN! Dahn-dahn-DAHN-dahn! Dahn-dahn-DAHN! Dahn-dahn-DAAAAAAAAHN!” We can do this!

GONZO: I-I'm afraid not, sir.

BUSH: You can be like that weird, little brown dude in The Association! C'mon!

GONZO: Here's my key to the White House washroom. I enjoyed handing towels to you.

BUSH: (exploding) Well fuck you then, Baba Looey! Fuck you sideways! Quick Draw don't need you, anyway! In fact...(Calls out) Laura! Get yer face outta that ditch and call the INS fer me! Seems we got us a non-citizen intruder!

GONZO: Sir, I am a citizen.

BUSH: So was yer boy, Padilla. Ha-hah! Don't mean shit! I don't need you! I don't need Karl! I don't need Condi-

GONZO: She hasn't quit, sir.

BUSH: Whut th-well where the hell has she fucking been? Screw it! I don't need anybody! All I need...(Lifts a clanking, clattering case from behind a roll of insulation) are my friends...fuggin' Moussy and O'Doul (Laughs) Moussy. Henh-henh, Sounds kinda Moo-slim. (Laughs again, then yells) They're all I need!

GONZO: Sir...that's an awful lot of bottles. Did you drink those today?

BUSH: Yes, I. Did! Mother! (BEAT) S' non-alcoholic, stupid! I can have a hundred of these fuckers!

GONZO: Well, that's good.

BUSH: It'd be a problem...if I was brewin' pruno in the well behind the shed, and was dippin' from it every time I went back there t' get baling wire for this... Goddamned, pink fuggin' hay! (Kicks at a roll, nearly falling down) That'd be a problem!

GONZO: Oh, shit. Look sir. I'm uh...I'm gonna go now.

BUSH: Go! Be out! (Throws a Moussy empty at Gonzo who eludes it) I'll ride this bitch out by m' lonesome! (To himself) Don't need no-Goddamn-body...

GONZO (Pointing at Cheney) You've still got Mr. Cheney.

BUSH: (Reeling with surprise) Are you fuckin' kidding me? 7 years in—I still don't know that nother-fucker! Do you see what he's cooking over there? Karl joked about that shit! Dick's fuckin' doin' it! I've still got Cheney? He's got me! Get the fuck outta here! (Throws another bottle at Gonzo, missing again.) Go!

GONZO: Just wanted to say that it was a pleasure to serve under you, sir.

BUSH: Yeah, yeah...serve this, bitch! (Grabs hard at his crotch.) Who needs you?! You were just along fer th' ride! Cha-ching! Hear that? That was me droppin' your token-ass in the slot! Got me a pocket fulla tokens just like ya! So, hah!

GONZO: Good-bye sir. (Walking away)

BUSH: What? No “Adios, amigo?” (Screaming now) Oh, of course! You're too good for that! Amigo would mean “friend”! And friends don't just book up!

GONZO: Enjoy the fish tacos.

BUSH: Slow yer roll there, Speedy. (Waves the bathroom key at Gonzo) You've got a little more than this key, outstanding. Yer gub'mint car? The Escalade? Where's the key fer that?

GONZO: I don't recall.

BUSH: And your cabinet officer's credit card?

GONZO: (Now jogging back to the house) I don't recollect, sir!

BUSH: Wait! Your passkey to the White House gym! Your Blackberry! The escort service discount card? Where the fuck are they?

GONZO: (Sprinting now, past Cheney and into the house, toward the front door.) ¡No habla ingles! ¡No habla ingles!

FADE OUT

*Thanks, Professor Fate!—LM

Licensed To Lie

“I say what's the time? It's time to lie like hell!
Said, what's the time? It's time to lie like hell

Perks.

Who doesn't love "perks"?

Many times, they're the reason we take one job over another, or why we put up with bullshit about something we otherwise wouldn't. The perks. baby...the Goddamn perks!

And there are a load of really neat "perks" you get when you're the President or work in the President's cabinet. There's the cool, free travel. There's the way-clearing security detail. You don't even have to deal with intemperate people/folks who disagree with you--just label 'em dangerous and they can be spirited away from the building, area, or country to a local holding cell, or as far away as Guantanamo, so you're no longer troubled by 'em, if that's how you want it.

Free, high-quality medical care beyond what Johnny Lunchpail has access to, is yours to be had. No one with questions has to know your comings or goings--you can purge visitor logs, or block access to your phone records. Shit, you can even drunkenly shoot a dude's face off and get away with it. And...the slow-movin' bastard who didn't duck your random, Rumplemintz-fueled shotgun blast will even apologize for causing you to waste valuable buckshot!

Yes, Bush administration "perks" are Peeps-dipped-in-honey-and-rolled-in-confectioner's-sugar-and-flaked-coconut schweet. Yes, indeedy-doo.

But the "perk" that's the most awesome of all, the one that makes a Wall Streeter who gets a ten-figure bonus because of lucky-fuck rolls of the financial dice, as jealous as Josie & The Pussycats' Alexandra is the seldom discussed, License To Lie.

"The wha?"

I said, License To Lie.

I know. You haven't heard of it. It's kinda like that secret executive washroom you just found out about after six years on the job...or the undiscussed stipend the bosses get that covers expensive parking in-town. But The License To Lie is real, baby. Real, and as Al B. Sure used to say "In Effect Mode", too.

So who's got it? Who's rockin' it? Can I/you get it?

No, we can't. Because we aren't the President, and don't work for him, or have ever worked for him, or have tangible, tactile evidence of wrong-doing on his and his cronies parts--so no. We don't get the "license".

Although, I suppose I could refer to the "license" by its technical term, without having to use the scare quotes, huh? Okay...I will. It saves me keystrokes and HTML coding for all those funky bolds n' itals.

They also call it Executive Privilege, okay?

Ohhhhh, now you get it. :)

That's right, people your (somebody's--not mine) President yesterday trotted out that shattered-leg lame excuse for not allowing the "Dots-her-I's-with-hearts" Harriet Miers, and vapid, goggle-eyed, Administration Batshit Blonde Number 372, *Sara Taylor to testify under oath in the ugly, fired attorneys scandal. Note that these two so-full-of-Kool-Aid-that-they-trundle-around-screaming-"Oh Yeah!" loyal Bushies are no longer administration employees. Both booked up from their gigs to respectively spend more time taking belly dance lessons so as to finally entice "The Decider" away from that mean, old wife of his, and to finally count up that glass unicorn collection.

These people don't work for Bush anymore. But somehow, in spite of their now being private citizens, they can magically be transformed into examples of Bushus Employus Emeritus via Executive Privilege, and never, ever have to comment about the shady shit they engaged in and covered up when they were actually in employ at The White House.

Now, I know what you're thinking--above and beyond picturing Sara Taylor's counting glass unicorns as old Amy Grant tunes drone in the background--you're thinking, "Can Executive Privilege go that far? Should it?"

Well...let's take a look at that, shall we?

Here is what White House Lying Fuck (I'm ditching all the euphemisms now) Tony Snow let slither out of his reptilian mouth in March on the subject during a press gaggle on the matter.

Q: “Just to follow up on one point earlier, yesterday the President said, and you've repeated, that the principle at stake here with executive privilege is that the President needs to get candid advice from his advisors, right?”

MR. SNOW: “What the President has talked about is privileged communications with close staff members, that is correct.”

And here's what Bush's White House Lying Fuck Counsel Fred Fielding said about it in the last 72 hours:

"Executive privilege protects "a fundamental right of the presidency," Fielding wrote in Monday's letter, allowing Bush to "receive candid advice from his advisors and that those advisors be able to communicate freely and openly with the president."

Fairly clear. All legal-like and what-not. The president should have that right, one would suppose. The right to get "candid and unfettered advice" from his people without the fear of them being brought up before everyone to discuss those sensitive conversations.

But let's go back to that gaggle in March for a the immediate follow-up to Snow's statement:

Q: “But earlier you were saying that, when I asked about, well, was the President informed of this decision, did the President sign off on U.S. attorneys being fired, you said the President has no recollection of being informed of all this?”

MR. SNOW: “Correct”.

Q: “So were his advisors really advising him on this? Is this really privileged communication involving the President and his advisors, if the President wasn't looped in, you're saying, on this decision? So it was other people --”

MR. SNOW: “Well, that also falls into the intriguing question category.”

Hmmmm.

Let's go back to more of the record for some, well...clarification on that. Say, this past June 28th:

Reporter: “Is the president saying ... that he himself personally was in receipt of advice about the U.S. attorney firings, and that's why he's invoking the privilege? The documents went to him; that his staff provided him with advice, and that's what he's protecting?”

Senior Administration Official: “Oh no, no, that would be a misconstruction of the breadth of the executive privilege ...”

Reporter: “So, he is still maintaining that he had nothing to do with the actual discussions between White House staff, meaning [former White House counsel Harriet] Miers and [former White House political director] Sara Taylor, and the Justice Department related to the attorney firings -- that he had no direct involvement?”

Senior Administration Official: “No, there's no change in our position at all ... He has no personal involvement. Our position has never been any different than that.”

Okay...got it. The president was NOT apprised on these decisions as per the attorneys, and nor was his right hand of dispensation of evil, Karl Rove--according to Administration officials.

Now, let's look at what sort of information Executive Privilege is supposed to cover-- just for, you know--shits and giggles, okay?

"In the Supreme Court case of United States v. Nixon, Nixon's lawyers argued that executive privilege should extend to certain conversations between the president and his aides, even when national security is not at stake. They argued that in order for aides to give good advice and to truly explore various alternatives, they had to be able to be candid. If they were going to issue frank opinions, they had to know that what they said was going to be kept confidential.

In the opinion, the Supreme Court conceded that there is indeed a privilege for "confidential executive deliberations" about matters of policy having nothing to do with national security. This privilege is constitutionally based, deriving form the separation of powers. However, the Court held that this privilege is not absolute but can be overcome if a judge concludes that there is a compelling governmental interest in getting access to the otherwise privileged conversations, as in the case of the Nixon tapes."

Between the president and his aides.

Common ground here. Except for one simple thing, if you read the White House's reasoning--not even terribly closely, you see that there are tacit denials of having even discussed the attorneys issue. The most Bush has "said" he had to do with it is to having heard some of the "complaints about certain attorneys", and mentioning that to his toy consigliere Alberto Gonzales. No involvement. No discussions.

So...if he supposedly had no discussions on the matter with these people--Miers, Taylor, and Rove--then why, oh why is executive privilege--and the mantra of "candid discussions with aides" being invoked here?

Cue a busted, flustered Ralph Kramden.

Mark Green, former NY Public Advocate, and present top dog at Air America was on Hardball yesterday, and as smart as he is, he usually isn't very good at putting talking points across with his on-air demeanor. But he simply fucking nailed it on the executive privilege bed-shit:

MARK GREEN: “Now, president Bush has said, he had no role in it. Okay? Taking him at his word, then why won't he allow his aides to testify since there can't be executive privilege?..........”

MATTHEWS: (To GOP apologist/lying fuck pundit) "Lemme go to you John. The point--I think Mark made a good lawyer's point there, which is that if the president's claiming confidentiality of relationships with his aides, which makes sense, and then he denies he had any confidential conversations with them about this--what's his point? What's his claim of executive privilege if he wasn't involved?"

Now, in fairness...at this point, I should've included the GOP apologist/lying fuck pundit's response defending the policy...but for the sake of not embarrassing him, I won't--because he didn't even give one. He couldn't begin to answer that simple question put out there by Mark Green and yes, Tweety. His response is here, and it basically consists of him nervously chuckling and saying 'Bush feels he's got a strong case, he's got two chips left to bet, and what has he got to lose?'.

That's it. There is no substantive answer. The same way there was NO substantive answer when Cheney faced a similar question mere days ago over his claim that he was not a member of the executive branch in an effort to block access to information. He'd claimed executive privilege to duck releasing the minutes and attendee list of his first term energy meetings five years ago. Arguing this on the merits for these people is a no-win situation. It's like a one-handed three-card monte dealer lamely trying to fleece you. Except when you bust him and pick the obviously correct card, he simply says "Uh...nope, try again, and adamantly refuses to flip the damned thing over. So, the question remains--why..do they invoke this executive privilege thing on a fucking whim?

Answer: It's not on a fucking whim. A good lawyer friend of mine discussed this with me the other night and said,

"You don't buy an top-of-the-line safe to store dust bunnies in. It's for your valuables...stuff you don't want anybody but you to ever have access to. Executive privilege is a safe...a super-vault...fucking Fort Knox. You don't use it for just nothin'. It's for hiding away the most valuable, precious stuff you have. Stuff that would break you if it was in someone else's hands."

And thus, Executive Privilege becomes that ultimate "perk"--oops! There I go with the scare quotes again--it becomes...A License To Lie. The most super-absorbent Depends™ adult diaper, ever--capable of holding as much vile shit you can fill it with. But eventually, it stinks-- in spite of its absorbency, the deodorant in it can be overwhelmed. And while yes, it can hold an endless flow of shit, that doesn't mean the Depends™ doesn't actually expand to accommodate it.

Eventually, it becomes quite evident--"sniff!"--that someone...or something is totally...full of shit. :)

Vile image, yes--I know. Here's the PG version you can use on you gossamer-eared fundie "friends".

Ever have the superhero fantasy? You know, the one everyone has at some point in life? Where you imagine you've woken up with super powers.

What do you do with 'em?

Maybe you do some good...save a tree-ed cat.

Free a pinned construction worker.

Stop a mugging or two.

But at some point, human nature takes over in the daydream--and self-interest comes into play. You consider the ways, and just how much you can enrich yourself--how to use your powers for personal gain. Press coal into priceless diamonds maybe, rip boulders of gold from the very ground. But once you're on that track, the imagination moves on...you muse on how to rob a bank and get away with it. How to surreptitiously get back at people who you want revenge on. And so on and so forth. But sane folks almost always come back to reality, realizing that one would have to temper those powers to live amongst regular people. You can't really abuse that kind of power. It's the Spider-Man mantra writ large. "With great power, comes great responsibility"...and all that.

What we're looking at here--the Bush administration--is a group of stunted, spoiled fantasists who never have that moment of clarity that brings the absolute power daydream back to earth. These are people who actually don't realize that the power isn't absolute. It doesn't make you immortal. It's not the ultimate cheat code that gives you unlimited lives until you "beat the game". It has consequences. Effect. It sets precedent. Nixon tried to abuse it, and got smacked down. Clinton as well, and he got cock-punched (which is the "yang" I suppose, to getting cock-something else-ed). Will the judiciary pimp-slap Bush on this greased, rocket-driven slide down the icy, slippery slope? Odds would say, "no.", based on how he's managed to stack the court. But what he HAS done with this naked, ass-covering act is claw hammer the barely operating cerebrum of an already paralyzed legacy of a presidency to the point that the Florida shenanigans of 2000, the Katrina debacle, and even the "Mission Accomplished" moment will probably start to look like lesser events in the eyes of history. History is notoriously "Ike-on-Tina" unkind to instances like this from a president--and always will be. And when his party...his party, backs him up on this, tacitly, implicitly or benignly via silence, they run the monstrous risk of being judged on this act in elections to come. Get yer elephant bells and dynamite-plunger radios out of mothballs ya'll. We're on the verge of 1974 2.0. The backbreaking events leading this trip down memory lane probably being LibbyGate, and this craven act.

This cowardly act.

This unconstitutional act.

This solid de-marcation-on-the-historical-presidential-timeline-of-stupid-as-hell, act.

But it's the mega-"perk", this Executive Privilege. It's access to the secret corporate Olympic swimming pool. Meant to be used quietly, with little or no spectacle. And the President has brazenly...left a steaming, Caddyshack-esque turd floating right in the middle of it.

And abused it, twisting it into, a flat-out License To Lie

But I suppose one just "has to fight...for their right...to cover their a-a-a-a-asssssssss!"
