Obama picks Biden

Obama passes his first major test.

ABC News

The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.

Biden was last seen minutes ago at his Wilmington estate where his extended brood is gathering.

The Obama campaign would not comment, but Obama mentioned Biden twice in speeches on the trail this week, both times heralding his legislative leadersip in East Asia.

At the VFW convention in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, Obama said, "we must help Georgia rebuild that which has been destroyed. That is why I’m proud to join my friend, Senator Joe Biden, in calling for an additional $1 billion in reconstruction assistance for the people of Georgia."

And in Chesapeake, Virginia, Friday night, Obama heralded Biden's efforts to provide economic assistance to Afghanistan.

"I joined with people like Joe Biden to increase a billion dollars of investment," he said.

Biden will be a good attack dog.

Not to mention Biden says what he thinks, which will nicely offset Obama's recent tendency to move towards the middle.

One of the major complaints against Obama has been he lacks foreign policy experience and the ability to handle the military. Choosing Biden deals with that issue powerfully.

Biden also measures up in a HUGE way to the only real reason for a Vice President... in case they're actually needed.

In addition, Biden makes Romney look like an empty suit. Next to Obama and Biden, McCain and Romney look like a pair of empty suits, two, very rich fools, both clearly willing to betray every value they ever held dear to attempt to win the Presidency.

I know some people were calling for Obama's VP nom to go to Hillary Clinton, a different woman, or to another minority. Those would have been big mistakes. This race is difficult enough getting the bigots to vote for a black man. Let's solve one historic problem this election, and solve a different historic problem eight years from now when Biden is running for President.

Well done, Senator Barack Obama.

Home Run.

PS. No, McCain hasn't said who his VP is yet. I'm guessing Romney.

EMAIL TO SUPPORTERS FROM BARACK:

Friend --

I have some important news that I want to make official.

I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.

Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this
afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign
began more than 19 months ago.

I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of
us can't do this alone. We need your help to keep building this
movement for change.

Please let Joe know that you're glad he's part of our team. Share
your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it:
