The ACLU is doing critical work in Voting Rights Protection. And we had a big win in Michigan. A judge today ruled that Michigan’s voter removal program violates federal law and ordered the state to stop illegally purging voters from the rolls.
Judge Stephen J. Murphy of the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Michigan ruled that one of Michigan’s voter removal programs violates the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA). In question was a Michigan state law requiring local clerks to nullify the registrations of newly-registered voters whenever their voter identification cards are returned by the post office as undeliverable. (This would be a big deal in areas with recent foreclosures for sure!)
Detroit elections officials report that nearly 30,000 voters per year in that city alone are removed from the rolls as a result of this state election law.
The NVRA permits voters to remain on the voter rolls for at least two federal elections after voter registration cards are returned. So the Micigan state removal law was clearly in violation. It is unknown how this will effect people that have already been purged but this is a good win for We the People.

The Real Story Last Week; McCain Cuts and Runs from Michigan
The story last week was more than VP Debates and Bailouts. In terms of this year's election the real story was The McCain campaign bailing out of Michigan and moving his personal goal post to PA. and FLA.
The Guardian has a great little 101 piece about why this is important.
But beyond basic math this is important symbolically. McCain is conceding ground, which has got to be a big ego slam to him. The last two weeks have seen very little go right for team McPalin. She held her own in the debate yesterday, but did not gain ground. The news about Michigan broke on the same day. McCain got a pretty dramatic black eye in the bailout mess of the last 7 days. AND his signaling that Palin would give even less access to the media is not going to give him any press pillows to fall down on when he stumbles.
The fight is going to get more intense in Florida for sure. (damn?! Florida-- Again???) but he is showing his weak, white, pasty, underbelly an awful lot recently. It is no time for us to be over confident, but it is nice to see a little good news on our horizons. There's more...

Florida and Michigan Resolution
Gov. Howard Dean, DNC Chairman in a radio interview with Sam Seder said that he expects the DNC's Rules Committee to resolve the Florida and Michigan situation in June. Should be resolved by end of June.

Huckabee Michigan Ad
Not even a Republican “R”
This is a great ad to introduce Huck to Michigan.
No Republican "R" and the tag line...
"Most Americans want their next president to remind them of the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off".
Damn. In Michigan particularly, this will hit Mitch hard.
And remember, people there don't know Huck is bat-shit crazy. They're just coming to know him. Which is why he left the "R" off his ad. He's hoping to get in and out with television ads which make him appear palatable to people not paying attention. Like independents.
Might just pull it off too.
